Language
The main skill areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing are promoted everyday through a cross curricular approach and all skills are encouraged from ID1 onwards. You will find that our ID1 is comparable with Year 1 in the English education system where the children are exposed to early literacy skills from the outset.
We promote a ‘real book’ approach towards reading. We have an extensive selection of reading material from a variety of carefully selected publishers to offer the children an interesting and wide selection of reading materials. The books are leveled according to the Book Banding criteria.
Language lessons are timetabled across the school for one hour every morning. Each lesson is structured with an introduction to the main concepts which are genre and grammar based. Each lesson has a more specific focus on word level work, sentence level work or text level work. The objectives are introduced through the use of big books and a range of quality IT programs which we can access using our Smart Boards found in every classroom. The introduction is followed by differentiated work time and the session ends with a plenary to reinforce the concepts covered during the lesson.
The planning for English is conducted by the class teachers. The class teachers can also draw from the support of our specialist in house teachers to offer specific differentiated support for ESL children and children with other educational needs. Our timetable is organized so that the children new to English are withdrawn to receive their ESL lessons during the literacy time. This means that only 2 out of 5 literacy lessons per week include the whole class enabling the fluent speakers of English to have dedicated time with their class teachers to develop their knowledge and understanding of the English language.
The planning format is uniform across the school to ensure consistency and continuity, a feature which was praised during our 2006 inspection. Assessment is an integral part of our teaching ethos and the children participate in formal and informal assessment activities on a regular basis.
You can gain more insight into what happens in each class regarding English language development from your child’s class teachers.
•We have an extra class room with loads of Math materials which can be used by all children
•We regularly order new materials to help reinforce and practice Math skills
•We offer differentiated education with reinforcing, enriching and challenging activities
•Your children are being assessed regularly in order to determine their needs.
•We make use of assistive technology in our Math lessons, such as Smart Boards, which are being used in each class room.
•We have purchased an innovating scheme (Abacus Evolve) in order to keep up with the educational changes made in the British National Framework.
Our new scheme also offers Interactive whiteboard and PC activities which encourages pairs and groups of students collaborating to solve problems. The ‘Talk Math’ activities encourage mathematical talk in pairs and the Individual Practice Software helps your children reach their targets with extra independent practice.
We offer a structured, flexible, broad pedagogical and creative Math environment with planned progression and three levels of differentiation. We aim to make problem-solving, speaking and listening, collaboration and ICT a part of everyday Math learning.

Here at the Joppenhof, we are helping to develop communicative, respectful, cooperative, global minded, enquiring, thoughtful, adaptable and resilient learners throughout the curriculum. In the area of Math we embed these skills by teaching a variety of Math lessons in which we encourage the children to collaborate, talk about Math, solve problems and reinforce skills.
Here at the Joppenhof we use the British National Literacy Strategy as our main tool for learning English. Due to the international characteristics of our community we have tailored specific aspects of this curriculum so they are more applicable for our students.
The interest in the IPC-topics does not stop at school. Many children do research at their computer at home.
But even on holidays the whole family can get involved in learning about this specific topic. Read more...........
