Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
We have a fully equipped computer lab available for children from Kindergarten up to Year 6. The ICT lessons are taught in the lab by both an ICT Specialist as well as the classroom teacher. The ICT lessons in the lab are extensions of the classroom course of study.
In the upper grades, an emphasis is placed on using computers as a tool to integrate with the topic work being done in class. Year 6 makes extensive use of technology with a culminating “Exhibition” at the end of the year that is very impressive. In the lower school classes, computer programs tend to be used to help the student to be a successful student by learning how to touch type, increase Maths and reading fluency, as well as integrating with classroom topic work.
Computer use at home is encouraged. Indeed, competence gained at school should enable the student to be a resource for parents at home and allow the student to complete tasks at home using appropriate technology. Considerable effort is expended to expand and develop our capabilities and resources regularly.
A Computer curriculum is being designed to help the student be a responsible citizen, and to help the student be well prepared for the modern age. The School Board, in cooperation with others, have drafted an “Acceptable Use Policy” which students and parents alike sign at the start of the new academic year to ensure that the computers in school are used in a responsible manner.
In this fast growing area, we are keeping up to date on new teaching practices and computer applications. We have a fast Internet connection that provides students with a good opportunity for efficient topic research. We have a well equipped lab that ensures that our students are technically knowledgeable and able to make use of new technology that is well suited to the goals of what they are studying.
